🦴 Understanding CCL Tears
The Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) connects the femur to the tibia and stabilizes the stifle joint. It prevents internal rotation, hyperextension, and forward movement—known as the "Drawer Motion."
Symptoms:
A partial or complete tear causes joint instability, pain, and lameness. Pets may limp, avoid putting weight on the leg, or show signs of discomfort during movement.
Recommended Orthotic:
Stifle Knee Brace – Designed to stabilize the joint and support healing.
🐾 Signs of Achilles Tendon Injury
A complete rupture tears all five tendons of the Achilles, causing the hock to drop. The animal walks flat-footed instead of on its toes.
Symptoms:
Lameness, pain, and swelling are common. In partial ruptures, the gastrocnemius tendon tears while the superficial digital flexor remains intact. This leads to curled toes and a dropped hock.
Recommended Orthotic:
Hock/Tarsus/Achilles Orthotic – Provides support and helps restore proper posture.
🐾 Carpal Joint Collapse
Carpal hyperextension occurs when excessive force collapses the carpal joint. This condition often results from trauma, such as a fall, or from ligament degeneration in older pets. Puppies may also experience developmental hyperextension.
Symptoms:
Pets may show signs of joint instability, difficulty walking, or pain in the wrist area.
Recommended Orthotic:
Carpal/Wrist Brace – Stabilizes the joint and prevents further injury.
