Why Accurate Measurements Matter
A high-quality custom knee brace starts with two key components:
- A solid, well-formed cast that extends high onto the knee and remains intact.
- Clear, accurate picture measurements of your dog’s leg.
In this article, we’ll walk you through how to take the best possible picture measurements to help our team craft a brace that fits your dog perfectly.
Preparing for Measurements
If your dog has long or thick fur, please use the stockinette provided in your casting kit or a pair of pantyhose to gently compress the hair. This helps us clearly see the anatomical markers of the knee.
You’ll also need a sewing measuring tape or a metal carpenter’s tape measure—either will work.
Understanding the Knee Markers
There are two key anatomical landmarks on a dog’s knee:
- The top of the knee marks the end of the femur.
- The bottom of the knee marks the top of the tibia.
These form two visible “lumps” that help us identify the correct positioning for your dog’s brace.
The Two Essential Measurements
- Measurement A: From the groin (where the leg meets the belly—often marked by a change in hair pattern) to the top of the knee.
- Measurement B: From the top of the knee to the bottom of the hock (the joint just above the paw).
📸 Photo Tips:
- Ensure the entire leg is visible in the photo.
- The tape measure should be clearly readable.
- Take photos from a distance that allows us to see both the measurement and the leg’s positioning.
