Summer Tips For Special Needs Animals

Summer Safety Tips for Pets with Orthotics and Prosthetics

As we head into full-on summer weather, it’s important to consider how the heat can affect our special needs pets. While summer can be a time of fun and freedom, it also brings risks—especially for animals wearing prosthetics or orthotic devices like dog knee braces.

Here are our top tips to help your pet stay safe, cool, and comfortable during the warmer months.

1. Manage Moisture and Skin Health

If your pet wears a prosthetic, it likely stays on all day until bedtime. In hot weather, this can lead to sweat buildup around the stump, increasing the risk of skin breakdown and pressure sores.

Tip: Keep an extra sock on hand and switch it out halfway through the day. This gives the stump a chance to air out and reduces moisture buildup, helping to prevent irritation.

For pets wearing orthotics—like a dog knee brace or carpal brace—remove the device during nap time or midday rest. This allows the skin to breathe and helps prevent moisture-related issues.

2. Keep Devices Clean and Dry

Summer play often means more dirt, water, and outdoor fun. But dirt and moisture trapped under a device can cause skin irritation or even wounds.

Tip: Rinse or wipe down your pet’s device each evening. Towel off any excess water and let it air dry overnight. A clean, dry device is essential for comfort and safety.

3. Prioritize Hydration

Hydration is critical during the summer—whether your pet has special needs or not. Always provide access to fresh, clean drinking water throughout the day.

4. Provide Shade and Comfort

Make sure your pet has access to shaded areas when outdoors. Ask yourself: Would I be comfortable spending time in this environment? If the answer is no, it’s time to add shade, water, or cooling options.

5. Remove Devices at Night

Always remove your pet’s orthotic or prosthetic device at night. This gives the limb or stump time to breathe and allows you to clean and dry the device properly before the next day.
